LIP FILLER
Lip filler
Full lips have long been linked with a youthful look. Lip filler is one of the treatments people ask about most often in facial aesthetics.

Who can have lip filler?
Lip filler can be done for different needs and features. One of the most important reasons is lips that have started to lose volume and definition with age. The need often increases after the thirties. With sun, smoking and genetic factors, lips can look pale and dry as well as losing volume. The border becomes less clear and the corners start to turn down. There are also people whose lips are thin or asymmetric from birth. Sometimes the lip is thin, and sometimes it turns inward. A gummy smile, or a bite problem of the upper and lower jaw, affects the look of the lips. Years of smoking can also cause asymmetries and small hollows. In these situations the aim of lip filler is reconstruction or refinement more than a simple refresh. In every person we see, a detailed examination should first set the needs of the lip and of the area around it, and treatment should be planned from that.
Which products are used, and how long do they last?
The main filler used in the lips is hyaluronic acid. Other filler materials are not reliable. Many companies make filler materials of different thickness and firmness. The material is chosen for the person’s need. Usually 1 to 2 cc of hyaluronic acid is enough to start. After a first treatment the effect lasts about 6 to 9 months on average. In some people this can be shorter because of genetic and environmental factors. In that group, reviewing at about 3 months and adding 1 cc if needed extends the duration.
Is there harm from lip filler?
Lip filler is chosen by people who have an irregular lip shape, who are not happy with their lips, or who want a new appearance. After the overall lines of the face are assessed, a lip shape that suits the face is formed. About half an hour beforehand the lips are numbed with an anaesthetic cream and the treatment begins. When it is done by a specialist, and the doctor’s advice is followed, the period after the session can be got through comfortably. Swelling of the lips can be seen for the first week or two, and that is normal. Bruising that appears in part fades within two weeks. With the necessary checks, in a short time
What should be watched before lip filler?
Stopping aspirin, vitamin E, omega-3, green tea and similar medicines and supplements known to thin the blood, a few days beforehand, reduces bruising afterwards. In people with repeated cold sores around the lips, anti-herpes treatment can be started to reduce a flare. An anaesthetic cream on the lips about 15 minutes beforehand makes the treatment more comfortable.
What changes in appearance can lip filler make?
- Increasing lip volume
- Defining the lip contours
- Lifting the lip borders slightly
- Reshaping downturned corners
- Adjusting the distance between lip and nose with small applications toward the base of the nose
- Softening the lines that run from the lip to the base of the nose (the philtrum)
- Reducing lines around the lips
- A more moist lip by easing dryness
Changes like these can be achieved with lip filler.
The effect is seen at once and lasts 6 to 9 months depending on the filler chosen. It is a treatment based on replacing this material, which sits under the skin and loses density over time, and on filling the space between cells.
