Port-wine stain treatment

A port-wine stain is a vascular mark present at birth that can darken and thicken with age. It does not disappear on its own. Treatment is based on a vascular laser matched to the depth, repeated over several sessions.

What is a port-wine stain?

It is a structural widening of the small vessels in the skin. It is common on the face and neck. It can start pink and become purple and raised over the years. Another skin disease can also develop on it, so it is checked from time to time. Makeup covers it but does not treat it.

How does the laser act?

The light is taken up by the blood in the widened vessel and targets the vessel wall. Skin type and the thickness of the mark decide the number of pulses. Pale, thin marks lighten earlier. In thick purple marks the lightening can stay partial. The interval is set by how the skin heals.

Care after a session

Bruising and swelling are an expected response. They last a few days. Sun, the hammam and peeling are not done in that period. If a crust forms, it is left to fall on its own. New sun damage can darken the mark again while it is lightening.

Expectation

The aim is to bring the mark closer to the surrounding skin. It does not clear completely in every person. Marks in the centre of the face, and thick marks, are more resistant. If treatment is paused, the mark can darken again over the years, so a review plan is made.
